Insurance-Approved Panel Beaters — Panel Beaters in South Africa
Insurance-approved panel beaters are workshops that have entered into a service agreement with one or more South African insurers, agreeing on rates, turnaround times, and quality standards. Under South African law, you are not required to use an insurance-approved repairer — you have the right to choose any licensed panel beater.
An insurance-approved (or "panel") workshop is one that has signed a contract with an insurer to handle insurance-claim repairs at agreed rates. The insurer benefits from predictable pricing and standardised quality. The workshop benefits from a steady stream of work. The motorist benefits from a streamlined claims process — the insurer arranges the assessment, authorises the work, and pays the workshop directly, often without the motorist having to lay out cash for the excess in advance.
However, being on an insurer's panel is not a quality certification — it is a commercial agreement. A workshop may be on an insurer's panel because of price competitiveness, capacity, or geographic coverage rather than technical excellence. Conversely, many high-quality workshops choose not to join insurer panels because they prefer to set their own rates or focus on private work.
Crucially, in South Africa you are not obliged to use your insurer's recommended repairer. The Short-Term Insurance Act and the Code of Banking Practice protect your right to choose any licensed repairer for your insured repair. The insurer may, however, only pay up to the rate they would have paid their panel workshop — any excess cost may be for your account. Always confirm in writing with your insurer before authorising work outside the panel.
The directory below lists South African workshops that have declared one or more insurer relationships. The relationships shown are declared by the workshop itself; insurers periodically update their panels. Verify with the workshop and with your insurer before assuming a current relationship.
