Immediately after a car accident in South Africa, ensure scene safety, exchange details with all parties, photograph everything, obtain an Accident Report (AR) number from SAPS within 24 hours if there are injuries or significant damage, notify your insurer within 30 days, and remember you have the right to choose your own panel beater.
At the scene
- Switch on hazard lights, place a warning triangle if you have one, move to safety if the vehicle is mobile and not blocking traffic.
- Call ER24, Netcare 911 or 10177 for medical assistance if anyone is injured.
- Call SAPS (10111) if there is injury, death, significant damage, or a dispute.
- Exchange the following with the other driver(s): full name, ID number, address, phone, vehicle registration, vehicle make/model/colour, driver's licence number, insurance company and policy number.
- Get contact details of any witnesses.
- Photograph the scene from multiple angles, including vehicle positions, damage, road conditions, traffic signage, and skid marks.
Within 24 hours
- Visit the nearest SAPS station to obtain an Accident Report (AR) number — required by your insurer if there is injury, death, significant damage, or any party fled.
- Notify your insurer's claims line. Most insurers require notification within 30 days but earlier is better.
